    What Is NAATI?

    NAATI (the National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters) is Australia's official body for accrediting translators and interpreters working within Australia. If you engage a translator who is based in Australia, that translator must hold current NAATI certification for their translation to be accepted by Australian government agencies, including the Department of Home Affairs.

    NAATI accreditation is Australia's own domestic credentialing system for translators working inside the country. It is not the only path to an accepted translation for Australian submissions — it simply does not extend to translators based overseas.

    The Department of Home Affairs' own guidance is clear: translators outside Australia do not have to be NAATI accredited.
